Shakira Choonara Young African Scholarship Award 2024

The scholarship is an investment in young people a thriving Africa and African excellence. To-date two scholarships have been awarded to deserving students who have completed their studies. The Shakira Choonara Young African Scholarship Award is an esteemed scholarship presented annually to a deserving final-year student, whether at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, including Honors, Masters, or PhD programs. This award is designed to support the tuition fees of a disadvantaged student who is in their final year of study. To qualify, applicants must be pursuing a university degree and demonstrate a strong track record of academic excellence, with a minimum of 70% in their current and previous years of study. The scholarship aims to assist students engaged in studies within the broader field of development, with a particular focus on desirable areas such as health sciences and gender studies. By providing financial support to students who are committed to making a difference in these crucial fields, the Shakira Choonara Scholarship seeks to foster academic achievement and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in areas that are vital for social and economic development.

Eligibility of Young African Scholarship

• Youth between the ages of 21-35 years-old;
• The applicant must be a citizen of any of the 54 African states;
• The applicant must be in the final year of studies (undergraduate or postgraduate) at an African university;
• Demonstrate financial need i.e. require the scholarship to settle final year tuition fees in order to complete their academic degree;
• A proven track record of academic excellence.
